TECHNOLOGICAL BASIS FOR GRIDWISE^TM

PNNL's primary role is to lead and shape the GridWise^TM vision so that the transformation of our power grid occurs sooner, more comprehensively, and with maximum benefits to the ratepayers and customers while supporting a healthy vitality among the utility and technology industries involved. The principle challenge in this role is to develop the basic tools and techniques needed to understand and guide the GridWise transformation. With respect to refining the characteristics of key technologies, PNNL is conducting essential scientific research and development to move the energy system into the information age:

• PNNL is developing and studying "transactive" control technologies that merge markets and controls, including Grid Friendly Appliances.
• GridLAB-D: next generation simulation software using advanced modeling techniques and high-performance algorithms to combine end-use models, distribution automation models, and software integration tools into a comprehensive power system analysis tool.
• PNNL is striving to develop a theoretical basis for understanding the behavior of the transactive, market-driven energy network envisioned by GridWise.

In addition to these GridWise-specific research and development areas, PNNL is also tying together related areas of expertise to serve GridWise progress, including intelligent building systems, sensors and measurement instrumentation, distributed energy resources, advanced computation techniques and national security.
